EPA Funds Green Groups and Tells Them How to Sue the Government

Posted by John Willis on July 7, 2011 in News

Investors.com reports that the EPA has been giving millions of dollars in grants to environmental groups and urging them to sue the agency, including telling them how to go about it.  It’s nice to know that my tax dollars aren’t being wasted on frivolous things.

…several environmental groups that have received millions in EPA grants regularly file suit against that same agency. A dozen green groups were responsible for more than 3,000 suits against the EPA and other government agencies over the past decade, Enviaccording to a study by the Wyoming-based Budd-Falen Law Offices.

The EPA even tacitly encourages such suits, going so far as to pay for and promote a “Citizen’s Guide” that, among other things, explains how to sue the agency under “citizen suit” provisions in environmental laws. The guide’s author — the Environmental Law Institute — has received $9.9 million in EPA grants over the past decade.

Labor Department Uses Sleight of Hand to Improve Job Numbers

Posted by John Willis on July 6, 2011 in Commentary

Alan Tonelson looks at the sleight of hand the government is using to make people think the job numbers are actually better than than are:

As bad as the U.S. employment picture looks, the official Labor Department figures understate the magnitude of the crisis.

Creating private-sector jobs — not adding to government payrolls — is the key to achieving a genuine recovery. But employment statistics define the private sector far too broadly. The numbers include too many industries in which demand, and therefore employment, depends heavily on subsidies.
